Pokalde Peak Climbing
Pokalde Peak Climbing – An Exciting Climbing on Rocks and Snow
Pokalde peak climbing can be planned as an extension to trekking in Khumbu region. Everest base camp trekking would be a better choice for acclimatization before climbing Pokalde peak. The peak stands about 12 km. south for Mt. Everest. Pokalde peak looks interesting rising to the south of Kongma La (5,5535m.) as seen from Lobuche. The peak is also known as Dolma Ri provides panoramic views of Himalayas from the summit.
Pokalde peak climbing is not technically difficult but scrambling on loose rocks and climbing snow ridge require the basic climbing skills on rock and snow. Furthermore some sections of Pokalde peak are quite exposed and should not be attempted on bad weather.
Trekking and Pokalde Peak Climbing Route Details
Pokalde peak climbing begins with the flight to Lukla. We trek to Kalappatthar to enjoy the best known Everest base camp trekking. We retrace to Lobuche and then proceed to Pokalde base camp via Kongma La. Pokalde peak can be climbed from either from Bibre or Dughla. Approaching to the base camp from two directions provide several ways for Pokalde peak climbing.
The base camp will be set up near the lakes beneath Kongma La to climb Pokalde peak. The base camp is fascinating with the views of the lakes beneath. The route is more rocky with less snow in Pokalde peak climbing. From the base camp we scramble over the rocks and gain the rugged pass. We climb nice snow ridge and cross several rocky pinnacles. Further climbing through broken rocks and snow takes us to the summit ridge. We climb a short section of near vertical rocks and reach the summit.
The panoramic views of the mountains including Makalu, Amadablam, Pumori is superb from Pokalde summit. Some expedition teams climb Pokalde peak just like Island peak for acclimatization before heading to the main expedition. Besides Pokalde peak climbing, trekking over Kongma La, a remote location away from main trekking trail in Everest region add more charming in this trip.
