Gokyo Kalapatthar Trekking – A great Hiking to the Best Two Vantage Points, Kalapatthar and Gokyo Ri in Everest Region
Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking is an alternative trekking with more adventure beside the famed Everest base camp trekking in Khumbu region. The trek explores the beautiful Sherpa villages, the home of legendary Sherpas on the back drop of mighty Himalalayas. Spectacular views of high Himalalays, including Mt.Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu from the summit of Kalapatthar and Gokyo Ri is the highlight of Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking.
Visiting beautiful monasteries and red robed monks under the shadow of towering Himalayas is another attraction of this trek. Crossing over Cho La pass will be a fascinating adventure in Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking. The pass itself offers the superb views of high Himalayas in Khumbu region.
Gokyo Kalapatthar Trekking Route Details
Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking starts with the exciting flight to Lukla. We follow standard route of Everest base camp trekking. We hike to Namche passing small Sherpa villages and spend one extra day in Namche for acclimatization. A short hike to Everest Hotel from Namche offers great views of Mt. Everest, Amadablam and more. We trek to Tengboche, another Sherpa town famed for its ornately decorated Tengboche Monastery situated on the lap of Himalayas. Following the main trekking trail, we reach Kalapatthar to enjoy the panoramic views of Himalayas including close views of Mt. Everest.
Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking takes us through different route on the descend. Retracing to Lobuche we head to Cho La pass, the most challenging part of the trekking rarely attempted by normal Everest base camp trekkers. We hike in the glaciers and cross the pass with great views of mountains and descend to Gokyo. Sometime ice and snow on the pass make the ascend and descend quite complicated and requires to use the crampons.
The Gokyo Valley with its placid Gokyo Lake on the backdrop of mighty snow peaks is the hallmark of Gokyo trekking. The ascend to Gokyo Ri offers the spectacular views of some of the giant 8000m. peaks, , Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse Makalu, Cho Oyu. We descend to Namche and then to Lukla to wrap up Gokyo Kalapatthar trekking with enough adventure to be remembered in the life time. .

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu
Meeting at the airport and transfer to a hotel. A briefing of the trekking trip at a convenient time.
Day 02: Kathmandu – Lukla – Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft): 3 – 4 hrs.
Flight to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft) with spectacular views of breathtaking Himalayas. Take easy walk to Phakding for approximately three hours.
Day 03: Phakding – Namche Bazaar (3440 m): 5 – 6 hrs
Walk through beautiful pine forest passing Dhudhkosi River crossing several suspension bridges to Namche with sights of Kusum Kangru, Everest & Nuptse.
Day 04: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar
Hike up to Everest View Hotel for better views of Everest and acclimatization. A pleasant day to explore around Namche or hike up to Khumjung / Thame.
Day 05: Namche Bazzar to Tengboche (3,870m) – 5 – 6 hrs.
Hike up and down through forest and mani stones to Tengboche (3870m.). Great views of Kwangde (6,187m.), Everest (8,848m.),Nuptse ( 7,879m.), Lhotse, Tawache & Amadablam.
Day 06: Tengboche to Pheriche (4,240 m): 5 – 6 hrs
Walk through the forest of briches, conifers & rhododendrons and some magnificently carved mani stones to Pangboche and further passing through beautiful array of fields to Pheriche
Day 07: Rest & Acclimatization day in Pheriche.
Hike up to to a ridge for acclimatization
Day 08: Pheriche – Lobuche ( 4930m. ): 5 – 6 hrs.
Follow narrow valley and contour around the base of the Khumbu Glacier and steep ascend to Lobuche.
Day 09: Lobuche – Gorak Shep (5170 m) – Everest Base Camp (5364 m) – Gorak Shep: 8 – 9 hrs.
Follow lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to Gorakhshep with the views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, etc. Move further towards to Everest base camp for amazing views of Khumbu Ice Fall.
Day 10: Gorak Shep – Kala Patthar – Lobuche (4930 m ): 8 – 9 hrs
The day of ultimate destination, the best view of Everest and other mountains from Kalapatthar. Retrace to Lobuche.
Day 11: Lobuche – Zhongla ( 4830m ) : 4 – 5 hrs.
Gradual ascend to a ridge for fantastic views of Lhotse, Nuptse, Island peak, Amadablam, Makalu. Make contour and pass meadows to Zhongla.
Day 12: Zhongla – Cho La Pass – Dragnag ( 5685m. ): 6 – 7 hrs.
Most difficult day in the entire trek with gradual ascend along the Kharkas and steep climb through the glaciers to Cho La pass with breathtaking views of the Himalayas and then steep descend thorough the scree slopes to Dragnag.
Day 13: Dragnag – Gokyo ( 4780m. ): 4 – 5 hrs.
Pass glacier, Kharkas ( yak grazing land ) to Gokyo, an old yak herders village, all snow capped mountain surrounded Gokyo lake.
Day 14: Gokyo Ri ( 5483m. ) – Machhremo ( 4470m.): 6 – 7hrs.
Steep climb up for 3 to 4 hours to Gokyo Ri, one of the best view points in Everest region with spectacular views of Mt. Everest, Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, Cholatse, Makalu, Lhotse and more. Descend to Gokyo and pass the lakes and then through the moraine, Kharkas (yak pasture land ) to Macchermo.
Day 15: Machhermo – Namche ( 3440m. ): 5 – 6 hrs.
Follow Dhudh Koshi River passing through forest covered with juniper and large conifers, rhododendron forest to Namche.
Day 16: Namche Bazaar-Lukla (2,800m): 6 – 8 hrs
Following rocky terrain and crossing Dhudhkosi several times, descend to Lukla
Day 17: Lukla – Kathmandu
Fly Lukla – Kathmandu and transfer to hotel. Farewell dinner at one of the finest
Nepali restaurant with traditional Nepali culture program.
Day 18: Free in Kathmandu
Free for your personal activities or it can be used as spare day in case of flight cancellation from Lukla due to bad weather.
Day 19: Airport Transfer
Airport transfer for departure.
Note: Kathmandu – Lukla – Kathmandu flight may be delayed by few hours or even cancelled due to bad weather condition. You should be prepared for such flight delays or cancellations. We will do our best to avoid such conditions. In case of flight cancellation, we will try to get you on the flight for the next day. Getting early flight for the next day may be not possible during the high season. We can arrange flight by helicopter as well with extra cost. If we have a group of 4- 5 people, we can charter helicopter for you to fly from Kathmandu – Lukla or vice versa. It will be advisable to have extra days in Kathmandu before and after the trekking. Ang Rita Trek & Expedition can arrange you cultural / adventure tours (such as sightseeing tours, rafting, jungle safari, ) with extra cost if the extra days are not used for the flight conditions to Lukla and back.
If the flight is delayed and cancelled for several days which could disturb your onward journey, you are free to choose trekking in Annapurna, Langtang and other regions and Ang Rita Trek & Expedition will arrange the alternative trek for you as soon as possible

- An experienced English speaking trek leader ( trekking guide ) and assistant trekking guide ( 4 trekking members )
- Porters ( one porter between two trekkers ) to carry luggage including their meals, accommodation, wages, equipment and accident insurance.
